The Covenant Foundation Mourns the Passing of Our Colleague and Friend Janice Silverman Rebibo z”l

We join Arnee Winshall, the staff, and the board of Hebrew at the Center in mourning the death of Janice Silverman Rebibo z”l. Janice was a caring, creative, talented, and brilliant woman who was loved and admired by all who knew her. She was a tireless advocate for all things relating to the Hebrew language who has had a profound impact on so many as an educator, writer, and friend. We will all profoundly miss her inspiring presence.

May the memories of her life remain with her family, friends and colleagues and sustain us all.

ברוך דיין האמת

A poem for Passover by Janice Silverman Rebibo

Opening Doors

Our table is small this year
and as large as an opening
door.
We are two, my
miraculous father and I.
Plus two more.
We tell them our story
alternating between a salt sea
and something so dry
on my tongue
as to justify redemption
by means of multiple goblets
of a local kosher wine.

It is the wonder of a white
paper napkin
in my father’s hand, ever-ready
to wrap that broken piece
of altered bread, which frees
me, the youngest
though over sixty,
from my narrow place
