Theater

To collaborate with other faith communities in Harlem and Morningside Heights in the next phase in the evolution of this project.

The goal of The inHEIRitance Project is to engage Jewish communities with ‘process share’: giving them access to the art of making theater as a tool for communal Torah study and Jewish expression. They have experimented with the theater making process both inside and out of traditional Jewish classrooms and communal spaces and found that giving people a chance to tell their own stories in reflection of our ancient narratives confers a unique ownership on those narratives, on the Torah.

This proposal will afford The inHEIRitance Project the opportunity to sit in residence at the Jewish Theological Seminary. This will allow them to continue their work and develop the next narrative in the Torah: Exodus. This partnership will also provide them access to a concentrated community of practitioners and trainers in the world of Jewish education who can study their work, and help define and cultivate it.  JTS is interested in housing the project and collaborating with The inHEIRitance Project to enrich its campus community and to build stronger relationships with its neighbors in Harlem/Morningside Heights.

The process will be a two year residency which will include phases of study with JTS students and faculty and neighboring faith communities in Harlem, material generation (story sharing), script development, and performance.
