Valley Beit Midrash – To enhance and enrich a Jewish learning and social action fellowship for Jewish young adults through increased opportunities for connection and community building.

Can you share a bit about both the Jewish learning and social action components of this fellowship?

Throughout the course of the year-long program, fellows launch their own community improvement projects that are rooted in Jewish values. They also gather monthly for group learning sessions consisting of guest speakers, leadership development and relationship building as a cohort. Learning and action are key pillars of Valley Beit Midrash and it is integral to our work to fuse them together. Not only do fellows learn about how they can take action in pursuit of a more just world, but they are also exposed to text-based Jewish sources that demonstrate why this work is so important to our community.

At which stage of life are your fellows? Why that particular age?

When we think of Jewish education, most opportunities are for children, teens, college students, or seniors. However, there are many Jews post-college looking for a way to continue their connection to Judaism outside of the traditional synagogue membership model. Many of our current fellows, who are in their twenties, have experienced antisemitism in the past, especially in academic settings and with other social action groups outside the Jewish community. We are able to offer them a sense of camaraderie, a safe space to develop their leadership skills and the tools they need to become the next generation of change-makers in their communities.

What do you enjoy most about working with Jewish young adults?

What I enjoy most about working with Jewish young adults is the opportunity to inspire the next generation and help shape the future of our community. I find it incredibly meaningful to foster strong Jewish identities, encourage engagement with our traditions, and create spaces where young adults feel connected to something greater than themselves. Knowing that I play even a small role in ensuring the strength and vibrancy of our community for generations to come is very fulfilling and deeply rewarding.
